With many people visiting relatives or going on holiday in August, Luxembourg was quite a dead place in terms of cultural activities that summer month....UNTIL Congés Annulés ('holidays cancelled') came along! Rotondes have programmed a full month of awesome band and film screenings, and there's a beautiful outdoor patio setting with a bar and live DJ sets. Great also for an afterwork drink during the week. See Francis of Delirium, Haru Nemuri and Fat Dog on this opening night for just €5!

3. Play games in the City

The annual games festival is one of the highlights of the Summer in the City programme. For this event, on Friday and Saturday, the city centre is transformed into one giant playground for children, featuring a host of games and workshops and street performers from all over Europe. It is mainly focused on children aged 4-12, but everyone is welcome, including the parents (who will become kids themselves again).

4. Watch beach volleyball competition

The Luxembourg Beach Open is back in the sands of southern Esch this weekend! Watch teams smash, dive and battle it out for the grand prize while DJs spin the funkiest beats to cocktails and beer. There are no more tickets to actually play as a team, but you can still see the action from up close and on Saturday the courts are open in the evening.
5. Watch Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan's new cinematic masterpiece tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is appointed during World War II to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on 16 July, 1945, as they witness the world's first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history. Featuring Cillian Murphy, which is, of course, reason enough to see this film.
6. Get knighted (or beheaded?) at medieval festival

Vianden Castle, declared by CNN as one of the world's most beautiful castles, is hosting the enchanting Medieval Festival these next 9 days. More than 100 participants will fill the castle grounds with medieval life, including fire and battle shows, jugglers, medieval music, markets and crafts, calligraphy and all kinds of delicacies. Get ready for some fierce knight action as well, and if you ask a brave fighter for his sword, you can get knighthood too.

7. Learn African dance & music

Head to the Beaufort generation gardens this weekend for an African-centred festival celebrating music and the arts but also diversity and respect for nature. The programme includes dance workshops with instructors from Guinea, Cape Verde and Burkina Faso, music concerts with percussion groups and a band, a raffle to win artisanal products, a village with food and drinks, braids and tattoos, and an art exhibitions. Come visit this lovely place!
