The orange flood alert has been extended until 8am on Thursday, with authorities warning that significant rainfall might potentially cause floods in the south of the Grand Duchy.

The heavy showers that began on Tuesday evening are expected to continue throughout the day on Wednesday and well into the night. Between 30 and 40 litres per square metre, and locally even more, could fall over the next hours.

The orange level flood alert for southern Luxembourg has subsequently been extended until 8am on Thursday.

According to Meteolux' Thursday morning report, persistent rainfall from the previous night "has already led to a rapid rise in water levels in the south of the country".

On the Alzette, water levels in Hesperange, Pfaffenthal, Steinsel, and Mersch already exceeded the orange threshold by midday. A red alert could still be issued, as authorities stated in their latest assessment.

Meanwhile, the alert level in Germany remains red.
