Time has really flown by: Jamiroquai has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide, the last of which, Automaton, came out in 2017. The band’s now 27 year long career saw its boom with the release of their third album Travelling Without Moving (1996) and a number of singles that were quickly ingrained on a whole generation in the late 90s.
Unmistakable hats and feathered ornaments may have since given way to a futuristic LED helmet: Jay Kay, the band’s emblematic lead singer, thereby expresses his love for new technologies. It has to be said that it works in junction with the stylistic effects on the screens...
Jay Kay has shown that he can still get a venue to dance, despite some humour he directed at his age (he’s just 49!).
The recipe for happy dancing is quite simple in the case of this band: just play some tunes from Travelling Without Moving and A Funk Odyssey (2001), the albums packed full of hits and of which contributed nine songs to Sunday night’s performance. Most of them were played in their extended version, so Rockhal got to enjoy a colossal two hours enjoying hits such as “Little L”, “Alright”, “Space Cowboy”, “Cosmic Girl”, “Love Foolosophy” and “Virtual Insanity”.
Automaton was represented with just the one song: “Shake It On”, where Jay Kay got the opportunity to play along hsi robot counterparts, before diving into a past which still gets people to dance.
Sunday was a funkday.
