Luxembourg police have issued a warning after receiving several reports from members of the public who were contacted by email or letter in connection with supposed police investigations.
Authorities stress that these messages are not genuine but are part of a scam designed to steal personal information such as passwords or bank details. Police are urging people to ignore or delete any suspicious communications and to never comply with requests made in such messages.
Key advice to protect yourself:
- All emails or letters that appear suspicious should be ignored
- The police should be contacted if there is any doubt about the authenticity of a document
- The content should be checked carefully, as frequent spelling mistakes are often a sign of a scam
- Links in such emails should never be clicked, nor should attachments be opened
- Sensitive data should never be transmitted by email or online messaging services
- Any ongoing procedure should be terminated immediately if doubts arise
Police are also appealing to the public to inform and educate elderly relatives and acquaintances about such scams. Anyone who believes they have fallen victim to a scam is encouraged to contact the police for assistance.
