Rail traffic between Thionville and Luxembourg will be entirely halted from 16 July to 23 August 2026, as the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) proceeds with extensive upgrades to this often overcrowded line.

The work, which includes the introduction of a second track set to open in 2027, will bring significant disruption for thousands of daily commuters who rely on this route for their journey to work.

The halt comes at the height of summer, which is a period that sees heavy cross-border commuter traffic. To prevent a complete standstill, several replacement transport options will be provided. In Hettange‑Grande, for example, additional buses will be deployed to maintain connections to Luxembourg.

In addition, the local council will offer complimentary TeMo shuttle services to Evrange from Monday to Friday, from which passengers can then transfer to public transport at Frisange for onward travel into Luxembourg.

While this period will be challenging for many cross-border workers, a range of alternatives will remain in place to ensure continued access to the Grand Duchy.
