Some 9,000 people gathered at Luxembourg's national stadium on Sunday night to cheer on the men's football team in a European qualifier against heavyweights Portugal.

Fans crowded outside the Portuguese team's hotel for the chance to catch a glimpse of their favourite players in real life.

Despite the unflattering 6-0 scoreline, the atmosphere at the game was lively, with a number of well-known faces in the crowd. The Portuguese prime minister and president both visited the Grand Duchy for discussions with Grand Duke Henri and prime minister Xavier Bettel. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took the opportunity to address the Portuguese community living in Luxembourg ahead of upcoming elections.

RTL captured the visit on film and even observed attempts to teach the Portuguese head of state some Luxembourgish phrases.
