Syphilis and gonorrhoea cases in Europe have reached unprecedented numbers in 2024, with gonorrhoea cases increasing by 303 percent since 2015, according to the latest European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) report.

The number of sexually transmitted infections in Europe has hit a new high, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which has reported record figures for both syphilis and gonorrhoea for the year 2024.

Chlamydia remains the most commonly reported infection, with 213,443 cases recorded. Gonorrhoea cases stood at 106,331, representing a staggering increase of 303% since 2015. Syphilis cases have more than doubled, reaching 45,577.

In Luxembourg, the figures stand at 15 cases of syphilis per 100,000 inhabitants and 86 cases of gonorrhoea per 100,000 residents.

The ECDC notes that the majority of cases are easily preventable through the consistent use of condoms.
