
ATM EXPLOSION – Police are hunting two suspects after an attempted ATM explosion in Eischen in the early hours of this morning. The centre of the village remains closed to traffic, and the public is urged not to pick up hitchhikers in the Steinfort area. The suspects are believed to be travelling on dark-coloured scooters or motorcycles. Anyone with information should call 113.
STATE OF THE NATION – Prime Minister Luc Frieden delivered his annual State of the Nation address in the Chamber of Deputies yesterday afternoon. The governing coalition praised the speech as realistic and honest, but opposition parties were largely unmoved, criticising it as short on new ideas and failing to tackle the country's most pressing challenges. Housing and youth unemployment were high on the agenda, with one in five under-25s currently out of work. Lawmakers will respond in a full debate later today.
PRISON POPULATION – Luxembourg's prison population grew by 20% in 2025, making it one of Europe's fastest-growing, according to Council of Europe statistics. Foreign nationals comprise close to 80% of detainees, far exceeding the European average. While conditions remain highly funded with low density, pre-trial detention rates rank among the continent's highest.
FUEL PRICES – Fuel prices are back up. 95 unleaded petrol has risen by 3 cents to €1.85 per litre overnight. Diesel has also gone up, now costing €1.89 per litre. In addition, heating oil has also increased by nearly 8 cents to €1.33/ litre.
EU-US TRADE – The European Union has struck a deal to implement its trade pact with the United States, just ahead of a July 4th deadline set by President Trump. The agreement sets levies on most European goods at 15%, in return for the EU scrapping tariffs on the majority of US imports.
EBOLA OUTBREAK – The World Health Organisation has declared an international health emergency over an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, warning it could be lengthy. More than 130 people have died, and hospitals in the affected region are overwhelmed. No vaccine exists for this particular strain of the virus.
PUTIN CHINA – Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Beijing today for talks with China's Xi Jinping in a show of solidarity between the two leader, following Donald Trump's recent visit to China.
IRAN WAR – G7 finance ministers are calling for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened, warning that the blockage of the vital shipping lane risks stoking inflation, disrupting energy supplies, and pushing up to 50 million people into food insecurity. The demand came after talks in Paris yesterday.
FOOTBALL – Arsenal are English champions for the first time in 22 years, after Manchester City drew 1-1 with Bournemouth. The Gunners head into Sunday's final game against Crystal Palace four points clear, free to celebrate before their Champions League final against PSG six days later.
Veteran Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo will lead his country into the 2026 World Cup this summer after coach Roberto Martinez today named the 41-year-old in his squad. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, now at Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, is set to appear at a record sixth World Cup.
CYCLING – Italian Filippo Ganna took a commanding win in yesterday's stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia, a 42-kilometre time trial from Viareggio to Massa. Portugal's Alfonso Eulalio holds on to the overall lead.
