Luxembourg native Patrick Augustin has built an impressive international career in financial research. After starting his professional journey at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and moving into the private sector, his drive for academic excellence took him abroad, where he pursued further studies and built an international profile. Augustin completed a doctorate in finance at the Stockholm School of Economics and went on to conduct research at prestigious institutions, including New York University, the University of California, and the University of Sydney.
Reflecting on his career path, Augustin explains that after five years, he decided to pursue an academic career. Unlike in finance or other fields, academia is an international market; you apply globally, and you need to be open and flexible. Ultimately, Augustin was fortunate to have several options and his choice fell on Montreal, which he describes as a rewarding experience for the past 14 years. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Finance at McGill University in Montreal, where he also holds the prestigious Canada Research Chair in Macrofinance and Derivatives. His research spans financial markets, risk analysis, and sovereign debt, and has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Finance and the Review of Financial Studies.
Having charted a successful path from Luxembourg to the global stage, Augustin remains one of Luxembourg’s most influential academics in international finance research. He is also director of the McGill Luxembourg Centre for Finance, which serves as a bridge between North America and Europe. Augustin notes that the beauty of being a university professor is the versatility; the main focus is research, but it also involves teaching and helping to run the university. One of his current projects is expanding McGill’s international footprint in Europe, and through its cooperation with Luxembourg, he is playing an active role in developing these initiatives.
For Augustin, returning to Luxembourg is not simply a career step, but a personal mission. After years abroad, he is bringing his experience and expertise back home, with a clear goal: to elevate finance education in Luxembourg to a new level.
Tom and John were back together after a few weeks away from each other and it was.....emotional. The dream team are back in business!
