Safer Internet Day is an annual celebration held in February.
The campaign calls on internet users to make the most of the web's potential in bringing people together.
One way to reach this goal is by joining forces to create a better internet, in particular for children and young people.
Daniel Silva, of the BEE SECURE internet safety initiative, spoke to students at the Lycée Aline Mayrisch of the dangers of cyber-bullying and data collection. He said students were often surprised to hear how easily their images on social media could be stolen and sold on, or that their personal profiles were used by companies to target users with adverts and information online.
Silva also touched upon the subject of fake news and image manipulation, shocking pupils at the ease in which their photos can be changed. The courses offered by BEE SECURE aim to make young people aware of the dangers of the internet and teach them how best to protect themselves online.
The talk ended with the motto "check your facts" - encouraging pupils to ask for information, instead of blindly believing what is circulated on social media.
