In collaboration with actors in the sector, the Ministry of Mobility presented its course of action to increase road safety from now until 2023, pinpointing eleven main challenges to be met in the coming years.
The ministry foresees a total of 31 measures, combining prevention and a crackdown on dangerous driving. These include the increase in the number of fixed, automatic, and mobile speed cameras set up to put an end to excessive speeding.
As follows, an average speed camera is due to be installed on the N11 between Gonderange and Waldhof before the end of the year. Other radars of this type would then be installed in tunnels and on dangerous roads, with the N25 between Wiltz and Kautenbach being one of them. The ministry confirmed that an initial plan is already underway.
The ministry also plans to selectively reduce the speed on certain roads outside built-up areas alongside a continued development of 20 and 30km/h zones.
A further major challenge is driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication. One measure proposed as part of this challenge is to put alcohol tests at customers' disposal in different bars and establishments. More generally, the ministry will ensure that breathalyser tests are more readily available as a preventative measure.
Despite the impending legalisation of cannabis, Minster for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch insisted on zero tolerance of driving under the influence of drugs. The minister also expressed his wish to optimise testing for drug use.
Generally, the minister wants to promote and improve the offer of alternative transport including public transport and taxis.
By 2021, the authorities will strengthen sanctions so as to reduce further dangerous behaviour, namely prohibiting wearing headphones or ear buds, using red light monitoring systems, and introducing vision tests.
Finally, the minister announced that the authorities are considering a new €145 fine and two-point deduction to penalise onlookers who slow down traffic and cause additional danger around road accidents.
