Anyone in possession of a torn euro note may take it to the Espace Numismatique of the Luxembourg Central Bank (BCL) on Avenue Monterey in the capital. The key requirement is that at least half of the note must still be present, only then will it be exchanged.
Different pieces of the same note cannot be presented separately at different times, and repairing notes is not permitted.
Staff run a series of security checks on the notes handed in, including the serial number, watermarks, holograms, and an integrated security thread. Notes can still be presented even after a house fire or flood, though holders must always be in a position to explain precisely what happened and, in the case of larger sums, to state where the money came from.
The bank only accepts banknotes, not coins. Coins must be exchanged at the holder's own bank or through specialised exchange services. The BCL only takes in old franc notes bearing the words "Institut monétaire luxembourgeois".
Other notes or coins are no longer accepted.
