Health assessmentMinistry of Health embarks on 2019 health assessment with 18,000 participants

RTL Today
In 2014, the Ministry of Health launched a study in which residents qualified their own health. In 2019, the ministry is launching a second edition of this study.

Five years later, the ministry and the Luxembourg Institute of Health are hoping to examine the condition of Luxembourg's residents' health compared to 2014.

As a result, the two partners have sent 18,000 randomly selected requests to join this study.

Who has been asked to participate?

The participants, residing in Luxembourg have been selected, from the national register of physical persons. They will have received an official letter from the Health Directorate requesting their participation throughout the course of 2019.

The LIH and Health Directorate are seeking men and woman aged 15 and above.

As for how participants can take part, they can either fill in the questionnaire on www.ehis.lu or request a paper copy.

Questionnaires are available in German, French, Portuguese, and English.

There are four components to the questionnaire: the state of the participant's health, the participant's tendency to use healthcare services, health determinants, and socio-economic characteristics.

The questionnaires will not include the participant's name, date of birth, or address.

Whilst participating is not obligatory, having as many respondents as possible would allow the LIH and Health Directorate to provide an accurate image of the health of Luxembourg residents.

What is the purpose of the study?

The main purpose of the study is to have a better image of the health status of Luxembourgish residents.

With this better image, it would allow the Health Directorate to adapt the health system to better fit resident needs. Other benefits of the study would allow the directorate to evaluate health policy results and analyse national trends and their evolution compared to other European countries.

Eurostat has organised an inquiry for individual countries to do in order to obtain an elevated comparative degree (European Health Interview Survey).

What did 2014's results reveal?

The first study in 2014 examined the habits of 16,000 residents. The results revealed that the biggest issue affecting respondents was back pain.

Further results showed that a third of respondents had limited activities for at least six months due to health issues, one out of five residents smoked, and four out of ten residents drank alcohol once a week.

Globally, 70% of participants did evaluate their health status as good or very good.
Amongst adults, 15.6% were classified as obese and a third (32.4%) as overweight. 35.8% did not eat fruit or vegetables on a daily basis.

Finally, 40.8% would do more than 150 minutes of physical activities per week, which placed Luxembourg higher than the European Union average, which was 29.9%

This year's study will compare with the results of 2014.
