1. Luxembourg’s constitutional revisions were approved by the Chamber of Deputies.

The government praised the revisions, saying the reforms would finally pull Luxembourg into the 21st century. PM Bettel and Minister Tanson said next parliament could go even further in terms of modernisation.
A New National Justice Council: The CSV declared that the Justice Chapter revision will strengthen the independence of the judiciary.

Insufficient Constitutional Revision: The Pirate Party and the ADR demanded citizen access to the constitutional court.

Also: MP’s unanimously passed draft law 7995 on improving quality of drinking water and 15 MP’s signed up to sponsor Iranian prisoners sentenced to death.

2. The Unemployment Rate in Luxembourg remained stable at 4.9%.

IT R&D jobs are highly sought after in Luxembourg’s job market.

Minimum wage in Luxembourg has increased over the past decade and MPs voted in favour of increasing it by 3.2% in 2023.

3. Paulette Lenert appeared ready to take the role of Prime Minister next year.

  • Lenert said she was willing to take on the role of PM if her party, the LSAP, wins more seats in the 2023 general election.

  • Franz Fayot would like to run with her as top candidates in the centre.

  • If the LSAP does win 13 seats, it will gain +3 and be in a position where it could ask its current coalition partners to lead.

LSAP leads the polls: A recent poll showed that if elections were to be held today, the LSAP would achieve its best result since the last vote in 2017 and become the largest party within the current coalition.

Lenert is most-popular politician: Lenert is perceived as Luxembourg’s most popular politician, skyrocketing to the top of the table during the Covid-19 pandemic for her practical response and surely also aided by high visibility.

4. Zelensky visited the US, his remarks in Washington revealed his worries for the year ahead

Not World War III: Biden and the US do not want to be drawn into a third world war, and made it clear that no US troops will be sent to Ukraine, in a bid to avoid escalation.

Plotting a new attack? Officials were wondering if a humiliated Putin is plotting a new attack due to an observed buildup of forces.

5. A Belgian court decided that MEP Eva Kaili was to be held in detention for another month

  • Eva Kaili, a now-former VP of the European Parliament, denied receiving money from Qatar.

  • Her lawyers pushed for her to be released from jail with an electronic tag, but the court decided to extend the pre-trial detention of the MEP.

  • her partner Giorgi; the head of an NGO allegedly used to funnel money; and a former MEP-turned-lobbyist, all of them Italian -- have all been arrested.

Belgian prosecutors accuse Eva Kaili of corruption, membership in a criminal organization and money laundering. She has been in custody since 9 December.

Context: Allegedly, Qatar paid members of the European Parliament for influence. Eva Kaili, and four others were arrested. Kaili was stripped Eva Kaili of her position as VP

  • A new global deal has been announced that aims to protect 30% of the world’s land and seas by 2030, with billions of dollars being dedicated to conserving wild places and species. 🌎
