Luxembourg's commission for human rights presented the legal framework of family reunification on Monday morning. Up until now, applicants for international protection can apply for family reunification within three months after they were granted international protection.

This deadline, officials previously said, will likely be extended to six months because it is often difficult for applicants to gather all the required documents within three months. The commission for human rights is in favour of further extending the deadline and demands complete flexibility. Representatives said that the deadline should at least be extended to one year, which is currently the case in Belgium.

The commission also recommended that the concept of family, as it is currently defined by Luxembourg law, be revised and adapted. The family structures of refugees are often different from European families. Each case should be treated on an individual basis and flexibility should be key, the commission stressed.
