Director general Fabio Secci confirmed to RTL that the fund has noticed that people are either scared to travel or don't feel like travelling due to the coronavirus. He added that a number of people have then visited the doctor to receive a medical certificate in order to claim refunds off the CMCM in order to not lose out on money.

The CMCM has noticed the tendency to abuse the claim and has reiterated that only people who are ill are able to benefit from the holiday cancellation claim. Secci added that this is not a trivial offence, but insurance fraud. He stressed that both the customers and doctors are engaging in insurance fraud and both parties can be liable to prosecution.

The insurance is only there to help when people are actually ill and unable to travel.

Additionally, a number of tour operators have demonstrated goodwill over the past few days. Both Luxair and LuxairTours customers who had planned to travel to Milan or Venice are able to cancel trips taking place up to 8 March. The tour operator and airline will refund these customers without charging cancellation fees.
