After almost three decades on Luxembourg's rails, the CFL's iconic LE3000 series bowed out with a grand tour organised by the Friends of the Rail, taking passengers on a last hurrah.

Organised by the Friends of the Rail (GAR asbl), the CFL's 3000-series train departed on a farewell trip through the country on National Day. From 9.30am until around 5pm, the train ran across the national network, travelling from Luxembourg City via Troisvierges, Kleinbettingen, Wasserbillig and Rodange before returning to the capital. It pulled four Wegmann carriages, which also carried passengers who had booked in advance.

The Friends of the Rail organised the event to give train enthusiasts one last chance to see the LE3000 locomotive in action.

From 20 units in service to just four

The first machines of this type were brought into service in Luxembourg by national rail company CFL and CFL Cargo in 1998. At their peak, around 20 of the LE3000 units, as they are formally known, were in operation with the CFL. Over the same period, the Belgian Railways had around 60 structurally identical T13 units on their tracks. In 2026, only four 3000s remain in service in the country, all of them with CFL Cargo.

CFL confirmed that the four LE3000s will only remain in service in Luxembourg this year and, with the exception of one unit which will go to a museum, the other locomotives have all been sold.
