The charity expressed its shock at the news one of its staff members had been arrested in Belgium this week amid allegations of human trafficking.

In response to RTL's questioning, the Red Cross said the employee had not attracted negative attention on previous occasions, and that the news of her arrest came out of the blue.

On Thursday, various media outlets reported that the woman, a Colombian native living in Belgium, had been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The Red Cross responded that they had never experienced any issues with the former employee. They were unable to discuss further details due to the ongoing investigation; however, the charity condemned the woman's alleged criminal acts and welcomed the news that the human trafficking ring had been disbanded by the authorities.

The Red Cross expressed their sympathies for the victims and said they hoped the people concerned were receiving the necessary support in order to rebuild their lives.
