A woman working for the Luxembourg branch of the Red Cross has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking and sexual exploitation, according to reports on Thursday.
The employee in question is a Colombian native living in Arlon and working for the Red Cross in Luxembourg.
She is said to have been the leader of one of Europe and Belgium's largest human trafficking networks for the past two decades. Along with her partner and accomplices in Cali, Colombia, she stands accused of luring people to Europe to then force them into prostitution.
The suspect was arrested as part of an international operation involving authorities in Colombia, Belgium, Spain and the United States.
Former colleagues said the woman had always left a good impression. Until 2018, the suspect also worked as a staff delegate for the OGBL trade union at retail outlet Zeeman.
The story was confirmed by Luxembourgish newspaper the Luxemburger Wort.
As always, the presumption of innocence applies until a verdict is pronounced.
