Despite Luxembourg experiencing a cooler-than-average June, the long-term trend reveals rising temperatures, with this June being 1°C warmer than the 1961–1990 average.

As Copernicus, the EU Climate Change Service, recently reported, this June was 1.5°C warmer than the month's average temperature recorded in the pre-industrial period. Given the seemingly endless rain that has haunted Luxembourg over the past weeks, it may seem hard to believe that temperatures are gradually rising in the Grand Duchy too, even as they are doing so around the world.

In June 2024, temperatures were 0.8°C lower than the average of 16.7°C from the 1991–2020 reference period. However, when compared to the average from 1961 to 1990, which was 14.9°C, then this June was actually 1°C warmer than the average. "One should not forget that the period from 1991 to 2020 already bears the clear mark of climate change", explains Luca Mathias from Meteolux in conversation with RTL.

Although Luxembourg experienced less sunshine in June 2024 than in 2023, the overall trend shows a gradual increase in temperatures, as can be seen in the below graph.

Mathias further clarifies that "not necessarily every region on the globe experiences positive temperature anomalies when it is globally 1.5°C warmer, as it is a worldwide average."
