With the Autofestival gearing up for its start on 24 January, the Automobile Club du Luxembourg (ACL) has published recommendations to help prospective buyers prepare for their purchase.

Amid new engine technologies, rising costs, and increasingly complex contracts, the ACL says careful planning can help motorists avoid a number of mistakes.

Define your needs

The first step is to clearly outline your requirements, including type of use, annual mileage, budget, and space needs. The choice of engine, whether petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric, should reflect your daily life. The ACL also notes that the purchase price is only one factor. Other considerations include insurance, maintenance, fuel consumption, and, for electric vehicles, access to a charging station and energy costs.

Compare offers and contracts

The organisation also recommends comparing multiple offers, checking the listed equipment in the contract, and clarifying delivery times and conditions for a possible return. Financing options – whether credit, leasing, or cash payment – should also be carefully considered.

Test drive and seek advice

Before making a final decision, it is important to take a test drive with the vehicle on familiar roads. This allows buyers to assess comfort, handling, ergonomics, and overall suitability for everyday use. The ACL also encourages those who are unsure to seek impartial advice, particularly on engines, costs, and available subsidies.

Support from ACL

With more than 191,000 members, the ACL reminds motorists that it provides year-round support and plays a key role in mobility across Luxembourg.

The 62nd edition of the Autofestival will take place from Saturday 24 January to Monday 2 February 2026, with special openings on Sundays 25 January and 1 February. The AutoOccasiounsFestival will be held from Monday 1 June to Saturday 13 June 2026 at participating car dealerships.
