With the clocks having gone back this weekend and the darker evenings upon us, the season that facilitates the work of burglars has officially started. The police have deemed it appropriate to issue a reminder of a few tips which can considerably reduce the risk of burglaries.

Whilst break-ins usually do not last any longer than between five and ten minutes, they can also take place during the day when it is still light out. Having sufficient mechanical and electronic protection in place can be especially helpful.

Here are the main tips to keep your home and belongings secure:

  • In the event that you are absent from your home, even just for a short amount of time, make sure to shut your doors and windows properly. If your windows have locks, do not leave the keys in them.
  • Garage and cellar doors should also be locked. This also applies to apartment buildings, where communal areas should remain locked at all times.
  • Again, even if only absent for a short amount of time, make sure to activate your alarm system before leaving.
  • Some burglars like to avoid light. With shorter days and longer nights during the autumn and winter months, it is highly advisable that you leave some lights on in your home or install motion-detecting lights in front of doors.
  • In case you are away for several days at a time, make sure to let your neighbours know you're absent so if they see activity in your home, they will know it is likely an intruder.
  • If you are going on holiday, let the police know via their online form. Police patrols can then include your area during routine checks.
  • If you see any suspicious individuals or vehicles in your area, inform the police. In fact, the level of efficiency of police questioning of criminal groups is highly dependent on the quality of witness statements by residents. Whilst all descriptions may be helpful, obviously the more precise, the better.

In addition, the national crime prevention service offers custom advice to citizens. Appointments can be made on the police website.
