A public petition that was presented in the Chamber of Deputies in late March has collected more than 2,000 signatures.

The petition calls for the modification of the May 9, 2008 law and more specifically the paragraph relating to "dangerous" dogs.

Currently five breeds are considered dangerous in Luxembourg: Staffordshire bull terriers, Mastiffs, American Staffordshire terriers, Tosas and pit bulls. These dogs and their "owners" also have the obligation to follow certain theoretical and training courses.

The petitioner asks that this list of dangerous breeds be removed from the law "while maintaining the training courses (...) but for any dog - irrespective of its breed - that is likely to pose a danger to people".

According to the petition, any aggressive dog reported to the Administration of Veterinary Services should be "examined by a "cynotech" expert (dog expert)", who will then decide if it needs to undergo training. If it does, the training courses should be paid for by the dog owner.

The advantage? Empower dog owners irrespective of the breed of their dogs. The petition has already garnered 2,000 signatures and is open until May 5, 2018. Thus, the threshold of 4,500 signatures needed to open a public debate is still reachable.
