BELGIUM DRONES – Belgian airspace was closed multiple times yesterday evening due to drone sightings at Brussels and Liège airports. Luxembourg offered to help divert flights, with Luxairport sharing its capacity with Belgian authorities. One plane was registered to land here but was cancelled when Brussels reopened. Luxair CEO Gilles Feith says recent drone incidents across Europe are causing real concerns for airlines. No drones have been detected over Luxembourg so far.
MISSING PERSON – The police has issued an appeal for witnesses regarding Anya Boissais, who was last seen on 1 November at around 6.30pm in Esch-sur-Alzette. Boissais is between 150 and 160 cm tall, slim and was wearing black clothes and white and pink trainers. The police say she is likely to be in the south of the country at present.
BIRD FLU – Luxembourg is battling a growing bird flu outbreak, with 18 confirmed cases in wild birds. The Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) is warning of high risk to poultry farms and is urging strict biosecurity measures. The affected species have primarily been herons and cranes, according to official reports.
5G NETWORK – Luxembourg's 5G network is already among the best in the European Union, according to the government. The country now enjoys almost complete network coverage. In response to a parliamentary question Minister for Media, Elisabeth Margue explained that 5G coverage is denser in the south of the country, because this area is more populated and the need for connectivity is greater there.

NEW YORK MAYORAL ELECTION – New York has elected a new mayor, with left-wing Democrat Zohran Mamdani set to replace Eric Adams. The 34-year-old, who's described himself as "Donald Trump's nightmare", faces an uphill battle after President Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from the city, calling Mamdani a "communist". Trump had backed Andrew Cuomo, the former governor who resigned in 2021 following harassment allegations from 11 women. Overall, it's been a strong night for the US Democrats: in New Jersey, Democratic Party candidate Mikie Sherrill beat out a Trump-backed businessman and in Virginia, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger took back the governor's mansion from the Republicans.
US PLANE CRASH – At least seven people have been killed in a plane crash at Louisville airport in Kentucky. A UPS cargo plane crashed during take-off, causing an explosion and major fire. Governor Andy Beshear warns the death toll could rise, with many others seriously injured. More than a hundred firefighters are battling the blaze. The aircraft was bound for Honolulu.
DICK CHENEY DIES – Former US vice president Dick Cheney has died aged 84. Cheney was the 46th vice president, serving under George W. Bush for two terms between 2001 and 2009. He is considered to have been one of the most powerful vice presidents in US history. The cause of death was complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.

FOOTBALL – In the Champions League, Bayern Munich secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over PSG in Paris, despite playing the entire second half with ten men. Luiz Diaz scored twice for Bayern before receiving a red card. Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Anfield, while Napoli and Frankfurt drew 0-0. Arsenal thrashed Slavia Prague 3-0, and Tottenham cruised past Copenhagen 4-0. Atletico Madrid won 3-1 against Union Saint-Gilloise, whilst Juventus and Sporting Lisbon shared the points in a 1-1 draw.
Tonight's fixtures include Manchester City hosting Borussia Dortmund, and Benfica Lisbon (featuring Luxembourg's Leandro Barreiro) take on Bayer Leverkusen.
The Red Lionesses have discovered their route to the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. Luxembourg have been drawn alongside Belgium, Scotland, and Israel in League B, Group 4 of the Nations League qualifying tournament. The draw was made in Nyon on Tuesday. Before the qualifying campaign begins, Luxembourg will play two friendlies in Cyprus between late November and early December.
TENNIS – World number one Aryna Sabalenka will face Nick Kyrgios in a "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match in Dubai on December 28th. The showdown echoes the legendary 1973 encounter when Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs. Sabalenka says she's proud to represent women's tennis in this modern take on the iconic match.
