A large-scale security simulation is underway this week on Place de l'Europe in Kirchberg, where residents and commuters will notice an unusual presence of machinery and equipment. The operation, scheduled to run until Saturday, is part of a routine test conducted by the Luxembourg Police and their external suppliers.
According to Anne Winter from the police's logistics directorate, the exercise serves a dual purpose. Primarily, it is a practical test mandated by public procurement rules. As contracts for installing security fixtures like metal gates and concrete blocks must be put out to tender every five years, potential suppliers must demonstrate their ability to deploy the equipment correctly on-site.
The tests are about the supplier demonstrating to the police that they are capable of setting up the equipment "in an appropriate condition," Winter explained.
Secondly, the police are using the opportunity to reassess the overall security perimeter. Winter noted that the area has undergone significant changes in the past five years, including various construction projects and the expansion of the Philharmonie. This allows the police to ensure that security can be guaranteed even during a major operation.
The exercise is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, after which traffic in the area is expected to return to normal.
