In a conversation with Stephen ‘Steps’ Lowe of The LunchBox on Today Radio, Robbie Skinner spoke about his new record “Worm Food” and his unique producing style, fixing the music industry, and the safe environment of Cavetown’s live shows.

Robbie doesn’t like handing his music off to other people. They can’t capture the same emotions and images that Robbie knows he wants to create. So, he takes quite an unorthodox approach to self-production. Robbie writes, records, and produces his music all at once, editing and changing things as he goes. He knows that by using a producer he could not wing it the way he loves to do.

He also wants every project he creates to be his best one. By self-producing he has a very real record of everything he’s learned, and his different techniques, something he would not have if he let someone else produce the work.

When asked what he would fix about the music industry, Robbie new right away. He wants to make every manager, every producer, “everyone who thinks they own an artist” a “good person”. So often young musicians will signs deals with managers and believe that the manager’s say is the end all be all when it comes to their art. Robbie wants to remind artists that they are in charge of their music; they are the boss.

Robbie wants concert goers to know that Cavetown concerts are very safe and friendly places where everyone is welcome. He often writes for live performances in mind, creating drum solos and fun bass lines specifically because he knows a live audience would love them.

Cavetown will be at den Atelier on 1 July.

“I feel like a lot of young artists, especially younger artists, are taken advantage of. I wish they knew they are the boss of themselves and their music.”
