Since 2004 The Schalltot collective in collaboration with the Kulturfabrik, puts on the Out of the Crowd festival to celebrate alternative music from all across the world. The festival started out almost 20 years ago, when the Luxembourgish music scene looked a whole lot different from today. With fewer venues back then, Schalltot and their festival were regarded as the true underdogs.

Nick Przor, whom you might know from “Talking Music with Nick from Rotondes” on RTL Today Radio, was a guest on the Sam Steen Show but this time, he talked about this festival he’s been putting on for many years.

Out of the Crowd sets the scene for many up-and-coming alternative acts from all across the spectrum of musical genres. From post-rock and post-punk, to indie rock and bedroom pop, all the way to electronic and techno music. Usually the afternoon sets will start off with lighter and softer music to scale up to the more danceable acts of the later sets.

On 29 April, the 12 bands will play on two different stages, the kufa stage and the klub stage put on by the rotondes.

This year the Luxembourgish post-rock band Kakumori will kick the event of at 4pm. Their set will be followed by another local act Sheebaba, who perform electronic & new wave songs.

Highlights across the evening will include Joe & the Shitboys who are coming all the way from the Faroe Islands, the American singer Dan Deacon who’s already a star of American art-rock, Fat Dog a band from the UK who are currently enjoying sold-out shows oversees and Beak> a band that already played Out of the Crowd back in 2019.

The event will be closed by Belgian transe duo La Jungle. They’ve played a few shows in Luxembourg before, so some of you may already know them.
Nick describes them as “sounding like techno but played with actual instruments”.

With all of these bands playing you can imagine that it’s important for everything to stay right on schedule. If you wanna find out more about all the organisation that goes into planning a festival like this, or more on the different bands and artists that will be playing, go ahead and listen to the full interview.

Nick is on zero sleep ahead of the weekend’s festival, and it is a doozy

On Saturday the doors will open at 3pm. Get tickets at kulturfabrik.lu and find out more information about the festival on ootcfestival.com.
