Headlining the biggest venues and festivals of the country can be checked off the bucket list for Lata Gouveia, who in 2018 even opened for pop-rock legend Sting during Open Air Belval.
During his time in the Grand Duchy he has built up a loyal following for his vintage folk-rock sound. So why play de Gudde Wëllen for a man that can fill venues double or triple the size?
“We had a really good time at Gudde Wëllen 2 years ago. It is intimate but still a listening room,” he says to RTL Today. “A small club like that is perfect for the original 4-piece electric band. You can pin your audience down, and give them an intensity of feeling that is harder to convey in large open air stages. Just us and 100 people who know exactly who we are and what we stand for.”
This small-scale exclusive concert experience is part of a wider discussion on music consumption: “We stopped playing bars a few years ago and also stopped playing free stages in summer.” They have done plenty of them already. This event is in the master’s own hands, so to speak, with complete control over their sound, set-up and plan. The way it should be.
One would assume that Lata’s international upbringing in Lisbon, Guine Bissau, Luxembourg and London has had a major influence in creating a melting pot of genres, but he has proudly stuck to his Oklahoma Red Dirt and Tulsa Sound traditions. His latest LP (Healed & Gone – 2018) was recorded live in the studio and was released in April 2019.
Besides his career as a recording and performing artist, he has been a father-figure in founding and shaping the Grund Club Luxembourg, which brings together semi-professional and professional musicians from the local scene in a creative environment to exchange music and perform together.
The platform and community is growing rapidly, attracting new upcoming artists at the Grund Club’s monthly Open Mics, while putting on full-on concert shows at the Rockhal. The next event will be on March 18.
