In an exclusive interview with Today Radio ahead of his upcoming show at den Atelier on 4 April, UK grime legend Dizzee Rascal delved into the making of his latest EP I Invented Grime, where he detailed how he took full control of the production.
Dizzee explained that he wanted to showcase his skills behind the boards, which he feels have often been underappreciated in the past. With this new project, he’s eager to remind fans of his multifaceted talent, not just as a rapper but as a producer.
Reflecting on his early career, Dizzee shared stories from his first days in the scene, rapping over other people's beats before stepping into production himself. This progression from artist to creator has shaped his distinctive sound, which continues to push boundaries within grime and beyond.
Looking ahead to his upcoming performance in Luxembourg, Dizzee revealed how much he loves creating fun, high-energy shows for his fans. His performance on 4 april at den Atelier is sure to deliver just that, fans can expect a night packed with the raw energy and infectious beats that made Dizzee a household name.
While his music continues to evolve, Dizzee also expressed frustration with the ever-growing demands of social media. He admitted that he’d rather invest time and money into producing elaborate music videos, but nowadays, a quick video shot on his phone often gets more views than a professionally made one. "I like making nice, amazing music videos with concepts and things like that. I like that. But a lot of that can go wasted", he explained

"You can spend a bunch of money, I spent my own money doing that, like, fucking ninety, a hundred grand on music videos. I'm never gonna see that money again. And I was told not to. But I did it because I wanted my music video and then millions of people didn't see it. But then you could do one post in your car that's driving around rapping along to your own song and you get to a hundred and fifty thousand views in a day."
It's a challenge many artists face as the landscape of music promotion continues to change.
