US punk rock band The Offspring launched the Luxexpo open-air concert series on Wednesday evening, taking the audience on a journey back to the 1990s. The veterans have now been performing for 40 years, while the band led by Dexter Holland has sold no fewer than 40 million albums worldwide.
It was therefore no surprise to see long-standing fans joined by curious newcomers and music lovers eager to catch the US group live in Luxembourg.
The Luxexpo car park was busy, although the concert did not sell out. It also took some time for the crowd to respond to the band's energy.
This may partly have been because the sound lacked a little punch at the beginning of the show.
Classics such as All I Want, Want You Bad, and Staring at the Sun transported the audience back to the late 1990s and early 2000s. The comic-style animations that regularly appeared on the screen reinforced the nostalgic atmosphere.
The Offspring played for just under an hour and a half. It was not an especially long set, but it was broken up by several cover versions, including songs by Black Sabbath and even Taylor Swift.
However, some of the lengthy conversations and exchanges between Holland and guitarist Noodles could have been replaced by one or two additional songs.
The band saved some of its biggest hits until the end. During Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) and Self Esteem, the group's energy, enjoyment, and power finally spread through the crowd, bringing the concert to its peak.
The result was a successful blend of nostalgia, punk rock, and varied stage visuals, proving that The Offspring remain an excellent live band. It was a strong start to the Luxexpo open-air concert series, which left the audience wanting more.
