On Wednesday morning, the new national football coach Jeff Strasser was officially introduced at a press conference at the FLF headquarters in Mondercange.
After coaching stints at CS Fola Esch, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Swift Hesperange, Jeunesse Esch and Progrès Niederkorn, Jeff Strasser has officially been presented as the new coach of Luxembourg’s men’s national team.
Changes in staff
At the FLF press conference, the former international thanked the federation for their trust and said he is looking forward to the role, which he will take on with great commitment and enthusiasm. Strasser stressed that he wants to continue developing the squad in the spirit of his predecessor, Luc Holtz.
Current U21 coach Dan Huet will step up as assistant coach, while Rui Forte and Claude Origer remain in their positions as goalkeeping coach and fitness trainer. Mario Mutsch will take charge of the U21 side.
Technical director Manuel Cardoni, who expressed gratitude to Luc Holtz for his years of service, will act as a link during the first training camp. The goal is to strengthen ties between the football academy in Mondercanve and the senior national team.
A different kind of challenge
With two fixtures coming up, Strasser acknowledged that there is plenty of work to be done in a short time. He ruled out sweeping changes, saying the core of the squad will remain, although gradual evolution is possible. Together with the federation leadership, he has set clear objectives to continue the team’s development.
The new coach emphasised that Luxembourg should play attractive, possession-based football that can be adapted depending on the opponent.
Player quality will be the key selection criterion, regardless of age. “The 23 best players at any given moment will be called up,” Strasser explained. No decision has yet been made regarding Maxime Chanot and Antony Moris, while Gerson Rodrigues will not be selected for the time being.
Strasser underlined that he is taking on the challenge with joy and pride, but without nerves. He revealed that he had personally approached the federation to discuss the role before formally submitting his application.
