19 flights bound for Luxembourg airport were diverted Friday evening after unauthorized drone activity prompted a temporary closure, affecting more than 1,800 passengers. The airport, commonly known as Findel, reopened and was operating normally Saturday, although passengers were warned to expect delays.
The diverted aircraft were rerouted to airports including Cologne/Bonn, Brussels, Frankfurt-Hahn, Liège, Paris, Basel, and Strasbourg.
Luxair confirmed that 17 of its flights were affected. A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight from Amsterdam and an Air Dolomiti flight from Frankfurt were also diverted, according to Luxembourg Airport's website.
The first affected aircraft was a Luxair flight from Heraklion that had been scheduled to land at about 10.10pm.
The Luxembourg government said Saturday morning that it would reconvene an interministerial drone task force in response to the incident. The task force had previously met Thursday after members of the public reported possible drones near Medernach.
