Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte stated that people would only be permitted to travel for work or family emergencies.
The measure will come into effect from Tuesday, and Conte stated that it is put in place to protect the members of society most at risk from the virus.
The extension of the measures which previously only applied to the north of the country will see public events — cinemas, theatres, clubs, gyms, sport events, weddings, and funerals, and football matches including Serie A for instance — banned throughout the country.
Conte further noted that the best thing for Italy's citizens is to stay at home for the time being.
Earlier Monday evening, Luxembourg's ministry of health issued a recommendation that events attracting over 1,000 people be postponed or cancelled - do note that this was a recommendation, not a ban - shortly after confirming the first cross-border worker infection.
