After issuing an orange alert, MeteoLux has now placed the entire country under a red alert for rain from 10pm Monday until 8am Tuesday.
Heavy rain is causing disruption across Luxembourg this evening, with authorities warning of flooding overnight. National weather service Meteolux has issued a nationwide warning, with up to 100 litres of rain per square metre expected in some areas.
Rain began intensifying around 7.30pm, quickly overwhelming drains at the Schueberfouer fairground on the Glacis. The Eecher Plaz and Rollingergrund were also reported flooded. Shortly after 8.30pm, police closed Place François-Joseph Dargent in Eich due to high water.
The Rue de Bridel has also been shut, after mud washed from fields and meadows onto the road. The Cellule d’évaluation du risque intempéries-inondations (CERI) raised the alert level to orange. The group met on Monday morning and again in the afternoon, forecasting 25 to 50 litres of rainfall per square metre, with local totals possibly reaching 80l/m².
Flooding risks will increase overnight, particularly along the Alzette and smaller rivers in the south and east.
The Water Management Authority confirms the danger. A yellow alert is in place for possible flooding in the north, while the south is under an orange alert along the Alzette. Authorities urge residents, especially campers near rivers, to take precautions and follow weather updates. CGDIS and police are reinforcing teams overnight. Rainfall is expected to ease during Tuesday morning. The municipality of Mersch has warned residents that the Alzette could rise sharply overnight and overflow.
In neighbouring France, Météo-France has issued an orange alert for Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle, with forecasts of up to 80 litres of rain per square metre in border regions.
