Luxembourg 

BIL SCAM – Dozens of victims of a major scam targeting BIL clients gathered in Mersch yesterday to coordinate their response. Frustrated by the bank’s refusal to accept responsibility and by political inaction, they are weighing legal steps, while continuing to press for stronger safeguards against fraud. In July, it was revealed that several clients of BIL had thousands of euros stolen through a scam. Many of the victims are still trying, unsuccessfully, to recover their money.

BETTEL IN MALAYSIA – Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel is on a working visit to Malaysia today and tomorrow. In Kuala Lumpur, he will meet the Prime Minister and his counterpart. In addition, there will be meetings with business representatives and investors.

AIRPORT RENOVATION Findel airport is set to receive massive investment for improvements and renovations over the coming years. Mobility Minister Yuriko Backes confirmed around a billion euros would be invested in the airport's improvement by 2032. Around €800 million of this would be financed by lux-Airport, the company managing Findel, while the government would make up the remaining €200 million to ensure safety, security, air navigation, customs clearance, and fire and rescue services.

PIZZA RECALL – A pizza sold at Delhaize should not be consumed, the supermarket chain has announced as it launches a product recall. Delhaize has decided to withdraw the product 'Delhaize Pizza Prosciutto Cotto 430g' from sale and recall it from consumers due to an incorrect expiry date.

BLOOD MOONThe Blood Moon cast a dramatic red glow over Luxembourg lat night. A lunar eclipse occurs only during a full moon, when Sun, Earth, and Moon align. As Earth casts its shadow, sunlight bends through the atmosphere, scattering blue light and leaving only red wavelengths to illuminate the lunar surface. World

FRANCE CONFIDENCE VOTE – France’s Prime Minister Francois Bayrou faces almost certain defeat in a confidence vote today, tipping the eurozone’s second-biggest economy into political uncertainty. Bayrou blindsided even his allies by calling a confidence vote to end a months-long standoff over his austerity budget, which foresees almost €44 billion of cost savings to reduce France's debt.

UKRAINE WARRussia launched it largest air attack of the war on Ukraine yesterday, setting the government building on fire in central Kyiv and killing at least four people, including an infant. US President Trump told reporters after the assault he was "not happy with the whole situation" and said he was prepared to move forward on new sanctions on Moscow.

NORWAY ELECTION Norway votes in a closely fought election today in which geopolitical issues including US President Donald Trump's tariff threats and the war in Ukraine could give a boost to the government. Veteran Labour Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store has a slight lead in opinion polls and observers said global uncertainty could push voters to back the perceived stability of a sitting government.

AUSTRALIA MUSHROOM MURDER – An Australian woman who murdered three people with toxic mushrooms has been sentenced to life in prison with parole after 33 years, capping a trial that sparked a global media frenzy. Patterson was convicted in July of triple murder for serving a poisonous meal to her estranged husband's parents, aunt, and uncle during a sumptuous beef Wellington lunch at her home in 2023. The motive of the murders remains a mystery.

EMISSION TARGETS – Almost all European carmakers are on track to meet EU emission targets after winning a reprieve this year. EVs are expected to represent 18 percent of new cars sold in Europe by the end of this year, meaning all European car manufacturers, with the exception of Mercedes-Benz, are in line to comply with the European Union's 2025–27 emission targets.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Luxembourg's national team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Slovakia in its World Cup qualifying game yesterday, conceding in the 90th minute despite dominating the match. The defeat leaves Luxembourg bottom of Group A after also losing to Northern Ireland earlier in the week. Germany bounced back with a win over Northern Ireland 3-1, while Slovakia now tops the group – an outcome few would have predicted at the start of the campaign.

In other matches, Spain beat Turkey 6-0,  Belgium also beat Kazakhstan 6-0, and the Netherlands won 3-2 against Lithuania.

TENNIS Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in four sets on Sunday to win the US Open. The 22-year-old Alcaraz won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to capture his second US Open crown and sixth Grand Slam title.
FORMULA 1– Max Verstappen finished with a commanding victory at the Italian Grand Prix, Starting from pole, reigning world champion Verstappen completed a magical weekend at Monza, which included the fastest lap ever in F1 in Saturday's qualifying round.

Weather

The sunny weekend is over and we start off the week back to grey clouds with rain on the horizon. It’s a mainly cloudy day with a bit of a break with some sunshine in the late afternoon. The rain returns in earnest from around 8pm onwards, keeping us company overnight. The heavy front, is expected to bring intense rainfall over Luxembourg. According to Meteolux, between 15 and 20 l/m² could fall. Temperatures start around 15–17°C, rising to highs of 23–24°C.
