Heavy overnight rainfall set new records in Luxembourg, with up to 149 litres per square metre in Mersch, leaving 20 roads closed and prompting nearly 400 emergency interventions but causing no injuries.
Twenty roads across Luxembourg remain closed early Tuesday morning due to flooding or fallen trees, while emergency services responded to hundreds of calls following a night of heavy rain.
According to the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), 392 interventions had been carried out by late Tuesday morning in 24 communes including Luxembourg City, Diekirch, Bettembourg, Mersch and Ettelbruck. Around 12 people were brought to safety, three were rehoused, and seven were rescued from floodwaters – including three from vehicles.
No injuries were reported.
The joint Operational Command Post (PCO-C), activated at 11.30pm on Monday at the Senningen National Crisis Centre, confirmed that unprecedented rainfall was recorded overnight: up to 149 litres per square metre in Mersch and 123 l/m² in Findel within 12 hours – levels never previously registered in Luxembourg.
A total of 200 firefighters from 16 local stations and three specialised intervention groups were mobilised, with police carrying out 30 interventions and fielding 70 emergency calls to the 113 line. The Bridges and Roads Administration reported 47 interventions, mostly due to fallen trees, floods, and landslides, with around 50 road sections affected, mainly in and around Luxembourg City.
The Ministry of Mobility reported that 20 roads were blocked; a decision was made to subject the entire motorway network to a reduced speed limit of 70 km/h.

Ongoing flood risk
As of 5pm, all flood warnings have been lifted.
Red flood alerts were in effect for southern Luxembourg until Tuesday afternoon, while alerts in the north and along the Moselle were lifted before midday. The water levels of the Alzette, although high, are expected to decline gradually over the coming hours. Caution is advised alongside riverbanks and streams.
Meteolux forecasts cloudy conditions with only light, scattered showers in the coming days, unlikely to worsen the situation further.
With conditions stabilising, the PCO-C has ended its activation but stressed that the relevant services remain on alert and will continue to monitor hydrological levels closely.
