The police cordoned off Rue des Pommiers, Rue Mathendahl, and Route de Bascharage in Niederkorn on Tuesday, starting at 12.30pm. The man was initially seen on his balcony brandishing a firearm, which in turn was reported to the police. In the meantime, the 61-year-old man barricaded himself in his apartment. Special police units arrived at the apartment block on Rue Mathendahl after midday.

At around 3pm, police officers were able to storm the building and apprehend the man, seizing his weapon in the process. Whilst witnesses reported the sounds of shots being fired, the press release confirmed that there were no shots at all.

Later on Tuesday evening, the public prosecutor's office published a press release detailing more information about the incident.

It is yet to be determined what the man's motivations were in barricading himself. He will face an investigating magistrate on Wednesday morning.

According to the CFL, the incident took place by the Petange/Niederkorn train station and led to train cancellations and delays. In addition to the roads listed above, the N31 was also affected by the operation.
