From New Year’s Day to Boxing day, Luxembourg will have no less than 10 public holidays to look forward to in the year 2019. Of these 10 days, employees in Luxembourg have the possibility of extending their breaks on six occasions without having to waste too many vacation days.

There will be three extended weekends in 2019 due to public holidays falling on a Monday or a Friday:

  • 22 April because of Easter Monday,
  • 10 June because of Pentecost Monday,
  • Friday 1 November because of All Saints’ Day.

In addition to this, there will be three opportunities to shorten the working week by taking a tactically clever day off:

  • Friday 31 May, the day after Ascension Day (Thursday 30 May),
  • Friday 16 August, the day after the Assumption of Mary (Thursday 15 August),
  • Friday 27 December, after the Christmas holidays on 25 and 26 December.

Unfortunately, Luxembourg’s National Day will fall on a Sunday in 2019. However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to take a day off work. In fact, labour legislation states that employees have the right to a compensatory day-off in a three-month period after the public holiday in question. However, not taking that compensatory day off doesn’t mean that you’ll get a monetary compensation.

In the coalition agreement, Luxembourg’s new government has announced that 9 May, Europe Day, will become a public holiday in Luxembourg. It is not known whether this will start in 2019, but if so, the public holiday would fall on a Thursday.
