The driver of the ambulance lost control of his vehicle, crashing head-on into an oncoming car.

In response to a parliamentary question submitted by DP MP Gusty Graas, Minister of the Interior Taina Bofferding confirmed the driver of the emergency vehicle was a young volunteer firefighter, who had passed his driving test some months ago. He had also undergone training as a paramedic.

Bofferding added that the Ministry did not have further information on the circumstances leading to the accident, as a judicial inquiry is pending.

In principle, any member of the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) has the right to drive a service vehicle, as long as the team member has the correct driving licence corresponding to the vehicle in question, said the minister. The CGDIS also offers road safety courses to its drivers, and last year acquired a driving simulator.
