
SCHUEBERFOUER'S 686TH EDITION - Luxembourg's Schueberfouer opened today, marking the start of one of the country's most anticipated annual traditions. It's back for its 686th edition this year, running into early September.
AIR QUALITY STABLE AFTER BELGIUM WILDFIRES – The government crisis cell confirmed that the concentration of fine particles in the air remained at a "low and stable level" following the wildfires in eastern Belgium earlier this week.
FUEL PRICES RISE AGAIN – The surge in fuel prices continues, with SP98 petrol set for a significant rise following yesterday's increase in diesel. From today, the price of SP98 will go up by 3.4 cents, reaching €1.932 per litre.
HONG KONG ACTIVISTS FOUND GUILTY – A Hong Kong court found activists Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung guilty today of "incitement to subversion" over vigils marking the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. Judges ruled they acted to undermine China's constitutional order and they face up to 10 years in prison.
EUROPEAN LEADERS CONDEMN ISRAELI SETTLEMENT PLAN – France, Italy, Britain, and Germany have condemned Israel's E1 settlement plan after bidding opened for more than 1,200 homes in the occupied West Bank. The four nations urged Israel to retract the plan, warning it risks "serious breaches of international law". The UN chief has called E1 an "existential threat" to a contiguous Palestinian state.
WOMAN CHARGED OVER CAPITOL PLOT – US authorities have charged Jessica Bowie, aged 35, with a terrorism offense after she allegedly told an FBI informant she wanted to attack the New York State Capitol in Albany. Prosecutors say the self-professed IS supporter sought help building explosives and is accused of trying to provide material support to a designated terrorist group.
US-CANADA TRADE DEAL "VERY CLOSE" – Canada and the US are "very close" to a trade deal, top negotiator Dominic LeBlanc announced after talks with US officials in Washington. Trump delayed new 50% tariffs by 72 hours as a deal looked imminent. Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked provinces to restock US alcohol pulled amid earlier tariff retaliation.
DOS SANTOS SIGNS FOR DORTMUND – German club, Borussia Dortmund, has announced the signing of a long-term professional contract with Luxembourger Enzo dos Santos.
Dos Santos joined Dortmund's academy from Swift Hesperange in January 2025 and became the youngest Dortmund player to earn a Luxembourg senior cap, debuting at just 16.
11-YEAR-OLD SET FOR ASIAN GAMES HISTORY – Yuki Kurihara, aged 11, will become Japan's youngest-ever Asian Games athlete next month, competing in the eSports puzzle game Puyo Puyo Champions. The young whizz-kid is aiming to also become the competition's youngest-ever medallist.
