Residents of Boulaide and Commune Lac de la Haute-Sûre are set to decide on a potential municipal merger in a referendum to be held before 2029.
The process began after both local councils approved exploratory talks in mid-2025, with discussions launching in November 2025. The mayors of the two communes, Jeff Gangler (Boulaide) and Marco Koeune (Commune Lac de la Haute-Sûre), confirmed the referendum timeline to RTL.
Preparatory work is already underway. The municipal executive boards have consulted the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Independent Municipal Mergers Unit and now hold joint meetings every three weeks. Ahead of the vote, officials plan to organise public workshops and information evenings for residents.
If approved, the new municipality would have a combined population of nearly 4,000. At 80 square kilometres, it would become the country’s third largest by area.
The municipality of Winseler was reportedly also invited to join the exploratory talks but declined the offer.
