Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg is celebrating the arrival of a red panda cub, born several weeks ago. For now, the newborn remains tucked away in its den, and the zoo has yet to reveal its name.
Red pandas are notoriously difficult to breed, with females only ovulating once a year and the mating season limited to the first few months of the calendar year. Each successful birth is an important milestone for zoos, making every new cub a significant event.
The zoo has cared for a pair of red pandas, Reva and Nishu, since 2020. Reva, born in Scotland in 2018, has become well-known to visitors for her successful breeding record in recent years. She gave birth to Nila and Rami in 2021, followed by Nyima in 2022, and surprised the team with twins last year. The new arrival now adds to this growing family.
The 2026 season at Parc Merveilleux continues until 11 October. However, anyone hoping to spot the newest addition will need to be patient: the cub will stay hidden in its shelter until it is old enough to safely explore its enclosure.
