MerschAgrocenter to be torn down

RTL Today
Now that the crane's construction is finished, the first tests to tear the building down took place this Friday morning.

An initial hole was struck into the building's façade in order to verify whether or not the rubble would collapse as predicted.

The space around the Agrocenter will continue to be secured off in preparation for the final demolition process which will begin on Monday.

Even the highest part of the building, the Silo, will come down, which will significantly change the Mersch's cityscape.

Back when Bettel was Minister for Culture, him and his secretary of state, Arendt, had initially placed the building on the Supplementary Historic Monument List on the 13 July, which prevented it from being torn down. However this decision has seemingly been revoked, without further explanation.

A compelling fragment of architectural history is lost with the building's demolition, alongside an important part of Luxembourgish industrial heritage. As opposed to Southern industrial landsites, this demolishment did not trigger any lobbying in terms of maintaining elements of Luxembourg's agricultural past.
