Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch announced that the government will allow a two-month transition period for Adapto users in order to give them sufficient time to apply for new passes, revealing the news in an RTL interview.
As part of the overarching move to introduce free public transport on 1 March 2020, the Adapto service will be made free and reformed as of March.
At the end of January, the Ministry of Mobility announced that those people who use Adapto services must request a new pass ahead of the change. In response to the press release, the 'Patientevertriedung' (patients' representatives) and the Luxembourg Consumer Association (ULC) both criticised the news, pointing out this would leave people with reduced mobility with less than a month's time to get a new medical certificate from their doctor.
Speaking about the decision on RTL, Bausch confirmed that old passes will remain valid for a transition period of at least two months. In the meantime, around 1,200 individuals have been contacted ahead of the end of January and already hold new passes.
According to the Ministry of Mobility's 2017 business review, the number of customers using the Adapto service rose to just shy of 10,000 (9,098) in February 2018. The budget earmarked to cover fees lies at around €12 million.
