The Cactus group has inaugurated a €150 million shopping complex in Esch-sur-Alzette, a project that created over 150 jobs and significantly expands the retailer's presence in southern Luxembourg.

The Cactus group has strengthened its presence in the south of Luxembourg with the official inauguration of its new Lallange shopping centre in Esch-sur-Alzette on Wednesday, 29 October 2025.

The €150 million project, launched in 2020, has created over 150 jobs and represents a significant expansion for the Luxembourgish retailer, focusing on a concept that blends commerce, community, and local roots.

A 65,000 m² mixed-use development

The new complex spans a total area of more than 65,000 square metres. The site features a 7,000 m² Cactus supermarket, a 5,000 m² shopping gallery housing 15 stores, a dedicated Drink Shop, and a two-level covered car park with 800 spaces.

The project also integrates 67 modern flats.

Designed by the architectural firm Beiler / François / Fritsch, the building was constructed by a consortium of Luxembourgish companies, including LUXTP, Poeckes, CDCL, and Félix Giorgetti. The retailer emphasised that the project was guided by a sustainable approach and designed for harmonious integration into the Lallange neighbourhood.

Focus on fresh and regional produce

At the heart of the new store's offering is a strong focus on fresh, regional, and organic products. Cactus states it is reinforcing its commitment to responsible consumption, with an organic section presented as one of the largest in the country.

Shoppers will find prominent placements for the retailer's "Vum Lëtzebuerger Bauer" (meat) and "Eist Uebst a Geméis" (fruit and vegetables) product lines. The supermarket also highlights its in-house bakery, patisserie, matured cheeses, fishmonger, and wine cellar.

The overall offering is complemented by several local partners, including Schnékert Traiteur, Eat Happy, Maison Thiriet, and regional coffee roasters.

15 retailers create hub for shopping and services

Anchored by the new Cactus supermarket, a 5,000 m² shopping gallery introduces a diverse mix of 15 retailers focused on food, well-being, and daily services. Key tenants include Oberweis, Cocottes, CK Fitness, Medi-Market, Acuitis, Mister Minit, 5àSec, Ferber Hair & Style, and the L'Enfant Roi crèche.

Bathed in natural light from a large glass roof, the gallery is designed as a welcoming space for both strolling and socialising.

The complex integrates several features aimed at simplifying the customer experience. These include a POST point for parcels and mail, a Scan Express fast-checkout system, and a covered car park equipped with family-friendly lifts and facilities for people with reduced mobility.

This new location solidifies Cactus's footprint in the south of the country, complementing its existing presence in Esch-Belval. Founded in 1930 and headquartered in Windhof, the Luxembourgish group reaffirms its role as a major economic player in the region.

"With Cactus Esch-Lallange, we want to offer the south of the country a modern and welcoming space where retail, gastronomy, and local commitment come together," stated Laurent Schonckert, the group's managing director.
