Luxembourg saw a decline in corporate bankruptcies in the third quarter, according to official data released Tuesday, though the overall number for the year remains slightly higher than in 2024.

According to figures published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), the number of corporate bankruptcies fell in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

From 1 July to 30 September 2025, 248 companies declared bankruptcy and 38 were liquidated. This represents a 5% decrease from the 261 bankruptcies recorded in the third quarter of 2024.

However, this quarterly decline contrasts with the trend for the first nine months of the year as a whole. Between January and September 2025, bankruptcies saw a slight overall increase of 1.6%, with 828 filings compared to 815 in the same period of 2024.

Preliminary estimates from STATEC indicate these bankruptcies resulted in the loss of 2,310 jobs in the first three quarters of 2025, a marginal increase from 2,298 job losses in 2024. The economic sectors most affected varied significantly, with holding companies and investment funds accounting for the largest number of bankruptcies at 221. This was followed by the trade sector with 126 bankruptcies and approximately 300 job losses, and the construction sector with 115 bankruptcies and 590 jobs lost.

Despite these figures, the construction sector shows signs of improvement. Over the first nine months of the year, bankruptcies in the sector are down 18% and associated job losses have fallen by 41% compared to the same period in 2024.
