A ministerial task force has deemed the installation of an average speed camera on the N15 "justified", confirming the government's intent to act following a fatal accident that killed five people in September.
The Ministry of Mobility has confirmed it will install an average speed control camera on the N15, a decision it has deemed "justified" following a fatal accident that resulted in five deaths last September.
The confirmation came on Friday, 3 October, from Minister Yuriko Backes in response to a parliamentary question. The move aligns with the minister's September announcement and follows the recommendation of a dedicated ministerial task force.
The head-on collision on 1 September, which deeply affected the nation, occurred on a stretch of the N15 between Feulen and Heiderscheid. Notably, this section had not previously been classified as a high-risk area.
Minister Backes clarified that the road itself – described as relatively straight, well-maintained, and with compliant signage – was not a primary factor. Instead, she indicated that the accident was likely caused by driver behaviour. She cited driving errors, excessive speed, and a failure to comply with the highway code as "key" contributing factors.
