For almost two weeks, the commune of Hobscheid registered significantly higher water usage than usual, around 6 cubic metres per hour in the evenings, compared to the typical 0 cubic metres per hour for a small commune. The unusual spike prompted the local authorities to publish a Facebook post on Tuesday, asking residents to check their water meters for any signs of leaks.
On Wednesday morning, a commune employee confirmed that, following the public appeal, one resident had reported back, though the precise cause of the increased water consumption remained undetermined at that stage.
The persistent drop in water levels was especially noticeable in the local reservoir, which continued to empty at an accelerated rate. By late Wednesday morning, a team from the SES water syndicate had identified a leak responsible for approximately 40 litres of water being lost per minute. Authorities cautioned, however, that there may still be other, as-yet-undetected leaks elsewhere within the commune.
The SES team announced that repairs to the leak discovered on Wednesday morning were expected to be completed by the afternoon.
