Moldovan citizens in Luxembourg will be able to vote locally in the 28 September parliamentary elections for the first time.

The polling station, part of efforts to expand voting facilities for the Moldovan diaspora, will be located at the Institute of Foreign Languages and is expected to serve approximately 1,000 Moldovan citizens in Luxembourg, who previously had to travel to Belgium, France, or Germany to cast their votes.

In Belgium, the number of polling stations will also increase due to growing interest among Moldovan citizens in the region, according to Viorel Ciubotaru, Moldova's Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg. The move reflects rising mobilisation of the diaspora and the authorities' commitment to ensuring that all citizens abroad have access to voting.

The electoral authorities of Moldova inform that Moldovan citizens abroad can vote using one of the following identity documents: identity card or personal ID of a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, a provisional identity card or provisional personal ID, or a passport of a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, including expired passports.

Important to note that an expired passport is only eligible if it has not been declared invalid, perforated, or cut, as occurs when replacing an old passport with a new one.

All Moldovan citizens with the right to vote are entitled to participate in the elections. The elections are considered valid if at least one-third of the registered voters take part.

The ballot paper for the 28 September parliamentary elections will feature 23 candidates, including political parties, independent candidates, and political blocs.

Over the past five years, President Maia Sandu and the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) have worked to strengthen Moldova's pro-European trajectory, a central theme in the upcoming elections. The Republic of Moldova applied for European Union membership in March 2022 and was granted candidate status in June the same year. Accession negotiations were formally opened in June 2024.
