The Ministry of Mobility reports an initial positive assessment following the opening of a section of the three-lane Dudelange motorway.
Drivers who carpool or use public transport are now able to travel faster thanks to a new lane on the A3. During peak hours between 6–11am towards Luxembourg City, time savings of around four minutes can be expected, and similarly towards France between 3–8pm.
According to the Ministry of Mobility, these initial results align with the goals the government aims to achieve with the expansion of the Dudelange motorway.
However, the Ministry also established that the accident rate has remained similar to that of 2019, before construction work began.
After an initial adjustment phase, changes will come into effect on the route starting 15 September.
Speed limits
As a result, in the direction of the Aire de Berchem towards the Gasperich interchange, the duration of the speed limit during peak hours will be reduced from 6–11am to 6–10am. In addition, the speed limit outside of peak hours will be increased from 90–110km/h. However, between 6–10am, the speed limit will remain at 70km/h in all lanes.
Furthermore, buses will only be allowed to use the hard shoulder between Aire de Berchem and the Gasperich interchange during peak hours from 6–10am.
In the opposite direction, the speed limit will be increased from 90 km/h to 110 km/h, except during peak hours from 3–8pm, when the speed limit for all vehicles will remain at 70km/h.
Further announcements
At a later stage, speed cameras will be installed on the route. Installation is planned for autumn 2025, followed by a test phase as with all speed cameras.
In 2026, a so-called dynamic signage system is to be installed. This would allow the duration of the speed limits to be more flexibly adjusted to traffic conditions.
